What is Poikiloderma Redness?

About Poikiloderma Redness

Poikiloderma is a change in the skin where it becomes thinner, has more livid pigmentation and there’s a dilation of blood vessels (called telangiectasia).

Poikiloderma of Civatte doesn’t appear on the shaded area under the chin, but on the rest of the neck area, and affected skin turns reddish brown with quite prominent hair follicles.

Irish people are quite prone to Poikiloderma because of our fair skin; although the exact cause isn’t clear. It may be a combination of sun exposure, chemical elements in toiletries making skin very photosensitive, or hormonal factors.

Poikiloderma and IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) Treatment

Our  Consultants can treat Poikiloderma with intense pulsed light (IPL) to reduce the pigmentation and dilated blood vessels, which will greatly improve the appearance.

Using an alpha-hydroxy cream or tretinoin may be recommended, depending on the patient. You may be advised to avoid heavily perfumed cosmetics; fragrances and other products that may exacerbate irritation. You should use a high SPF factor to avoid further sun damage
